LUCSUS has been identified as an Earth System Governance Research Centre to support the implementation of the Earth System Governance Science Plan and specifically to share responsibility for the analysis of the allocation and access analytical problem.

The Earth System Governance Project is the largest social science research network in the area of governance and global environmental change. Its international research programme takes up the challenge of exploring political solutions and novel, more effective governance systems to cope with the current transitions in the biogeochemical systems of our planet. The normative context of its research is sustainable development: Earth system governance is not only as a question of governance effectiveness, but also as a challenge for political legitimacy and social justice.

Earth system governance is defined in this project as the interrelated and increasingly integrated system of formal and informal rules, rule-making systems, and actor-networks at all levels of human society (from local to global) that are set up to steer societies towards preventing, mitigating, and adapting to global and local environmental change and, in particular, earth system transformation, within the normative context of sustainable development.

Based on this general notion, the Earth System Governance Project advances a science plan that is organized, around five analytical problems:

  • Architecture
  • Agency
  • Adaptiveness
  • Accountability
  • Allocation & Access
